Tenders are invited for the LivCom Award by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and International Federation of Park and Recreation Administration (IFPRA). Towns and cities throughout the world are requested to take part, ranging from a small village to a metropolis with more than one million inhabitants. The objective is to improve the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of 'liveable communities'.

Categories such as the environment and landscape, citizen participation, the preservation of the historic heritage and sustained planning for the future are evaluated. In order to ensure the towns and cities can be fairly compared the cities are divided based on their sizes into different classes.

This glass trophy and a certificate were presented to Ipswich in November 2007, when it was voted "most liveable city" in Category C for cities with populations between 75 000 - 200 000. Ipswich scored the win from a field of eight other cities around the world… congratulations Ipswich!

Why Ipswich?

Why did the LivCom jury nominate Ipswich as the world's most liveable mid-size city?

Excellence in Overall Environmental Management

An award for excellence in overall environmental management was presented to Ipswich City Council at the 2008 United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Awards held in Melbourne Friday 6 June 2008.

Mayor Paul Pisasale said it was tremendous for Ipswich to again be recognised as a city that cares for the environment and its residents.

"This latest national award joins a growing list of global awards won by Ipswich," he said.

"Among this list Ipswich won the UN-backed LivCom Awards for the world's most liveable mid-size city last year.

"Ipswich is also the only Australian city represented and a member of Partners for Liveable Communities in Washington.  This latest award has our city centre stage once again.

"Making the finals of such a prestigious award speaks volumes of the strong partnerships developed between Ipswich City Council, the business community, many volunteers and residents.

"The development of a climate change response is one part of our contribution to reducing the city's impact on climate change.

"Council joined the Cities for Climate Protection program in 2000 and in 2002 set the target of 20% emissions reduction by the year 2010.  We are on target to achieve this and Council is currently developing emissions reduction targets beyond 2010.

"We also have conservation agreements covering around 5,000 hectares," he said.

Ipswich community shines at 2008 Regional Tidy Towns Awards

The City of Ipswich scooped the prize pool at today's announcement of the Inland South East Queensland category winners in the 2008 Tidy Towns competition.

"Awards such as these validate the hard work both Ipswich City Council and the local community are putting into making Ipswich such a great place," Cr Pisasale said.

"It is a great step forward to win these Tidy Towns awards as it is a tremendous achievement which recognises the community as a whole.

"Ipswich has been avidly supporting the Keep Australia Beautiful Council and the Tidy Towns Awards for many years and has consistently been a strong performer in the annual awards.

"Council and the community is extremely excited by the awards we have won this year in a number of different categories.

"Awards of this nature would not be achieved without the support of a number of people and I would particularly like to thank all council officers who have contributed towards today's win for their hard work and dedication and also all residents for taking pride in their own properties.

"Congratulations must especially go to the Ipswich community of Marburg which collected three awards in their own right.

"It is tremendous to see the community spirit shown by Marburg and district residents and they should be extremely proud of their strong showing in this year's awards.

"Marburg residents are very passionate about their town and its history and were keen to share that with the rest of Australia through their entry in the Tidy Towns Awards."

The awards won by Ipswich at today's 2008 Tidy Towns regional awards for the Inland South East Queensland category were:

  • Sustainable Solutions Award - Ipswich;
  • Heritage Award - Ipswich;
  • Bush Spirit Award - Marburg;
  • Partnerships Award - Marburg and Ipswich City Council;
  • Individual Outstanding Accomplishment Award - Lance and Rhonda Dobbs of Springfield Lakes;
  • Friendliest Town - Marburg and;
  • Tidiest Town - Ipswich.

Cr Pisasale said the Tidy Towns awards also reinforced why Ipswich was named last year as the most liveable mid-size city in the world at The International Awards for Liveable Communities.

"At these awards Ipswich scored the win in Category C for cities with a population between 75,001 - 200,000, from a field of eight other cities around the world.

"Many of the same attributes which helped to snare us the 2007 Livcom Award for Liveable Communities also captured the eye of the Tidy Towns judges."

Cr Pisasale said council was now eagerly awaiting the results of the State awards which will be held on September 1 at the Local Government Association of Queensland in Cairns.
